The Commission is the governing board for the , which last year served 76,134 Oklahomans with disabilities. Achievers earn DRS People with Disabilities Awareness Day awards OK School for the Deaf selected to field test language development apps in nationwide study SULPHUR, Okla. – The Oklahoma School for the Deaf has been selected as one of eight schools nationwide to field test AvePM, a suite of eight apps that track language development in students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Apps, or applications, are a type of software written for computers or mobile devices that enable users to perform various tasks. Read more about OSD's test language development apps in study Today is People with Disabilities Awareness Day 2021 - join the event on social media and share People with Disabilities Awareness Day is today, so take part by sharing stories and celebrating those with disabilities who are pursuing independent lives. Throughout the day, watch ’ social media accounts to see testimonials from DRS clients and students who are pursuing training, education and careers to reach their goals and become Oklahoma taxpayers. Share those social media stories on your own account and be sure to use the hashtag #PWDAD2021 so others can search and find your posts. Also share a selfie of yourself wearing green, showing your support for the day. On Monday, four Oklahomans who are clients or students and who have received services from DRS, were honored during the Commission for Rehabilitation Service’s online meeting. Those honored included: DRS Vocational Rehabilitation Client of the Year - Jacob Fehr of Tulsa Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired Client of the Year - Christi Evans of Midwest City Oklahoma School for the Blind Student of the Year - Ben Middleton of Oklahoma City Oklahoma School for the Deaf Student of the Year - Isaiah Holt of Norman For 26 years, People with Disabilities Awareness Day is an opportunity for Oklahomans with disabilities to engage lawmakers and share their personal stories about what services are helping them live independent lives and pursue careers. This year, participants are encouraged to visit the event website at www.okdrs.gov/pwdad, register for the event and take part in a contest. Facebook users can stay up to date on the event by visiting the Facebook page. When posting on social media, participants are asked to use #PWDAD2021 in their messages. Oklahomans are encouraged this year to reach out to their lawmakers through calls, emails and through social media. In years past, Awareness Day brought hundreds of Oklahomans to the state Capitol to talk with lawmakers and share their stories. Read more about Awareness Day 2021 OK School for the Deaf offers adaptive equipment for Oklahomans with hearing or speech communication needs Telephone and assistive equipment is available for eligible Oklahomans who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind and those with speech communication needs through the Oklahoma School for the Deaf’s Equipment Distribution Program. This adaptive equipment is free or at little cost for those who meet the guidelines of the program. The equipment program is located on OSD’s main campus in Sulphur.
